    A visit to the WONSON's Broughton Park property by the Duke of Edinburgh on February 8, 1868.

  • Notes 
    • William's signature appears on the 1853 Bendigo Goldfields petition.
    • The petition was drawn up to list the diggers grievances and made a number of demands, including a reduction in the licence fee, improved law and order, the right to vote and the right to buy land.
    • The petition was signed by diggers at Bendigo, Ballarat, Castlemaine, McIvor and Sawtell and was presented to the Lieutenent-Governor in Melbourne on the 1st August 1853.
    • In April 1856 William purchased the 800 acre property 'Broughton Park' from John Archer Broughton for £1250.00.
    • William was well known for his large rabbit warren kept on the 'Broughton Park' property.
    • Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second son, visited the Wonson property during his tour of Australia in February 1868.
    • The Prince spent two hours at the property where "The rabbits were numerous and run well, but they soon fell in great numbers before excellent shooting. His Royal Highness (who was supplied with two breech-loaders) killing the most".
